What is a chronic disease?

The term chronic disease represents a collection of medical conditions that require ongoing medical care to keep under control. These conditions may impact your quality of life and limit your ability to participate in daily activities. Worldwide, chronic diseases including heart disease, cancer, respiratory diseases, and diabetes account for the majority of all deaths and one in three Canadian and 60% of American adults are living with at least one major chronic illness. Lifestyle behaviours including tobacco use, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol use are known to significantly increase your risk of developing a chronic disease.

Why is exercise important?

There is overwhelming evidence supporting the benefits of regular exercise at treating and preventing chronic health conditions however people with these conditions have unique challenges to becoming physically active.

How can an Exercise Physiologist Help?

Exercise Physiologists are healthcare professionals who specialize in developing customized exercise programs for individuals with chronic illnesses. They work with individuals of all ages and abilities and are guided by evidence based-practices to ensure that their clinical decisions are based on clinical research findings and clinical expertise.

All Exercise Physiologists have at least an undergraduate degree in exercise science or Kinesiology with additional training and certifications. They are considered experts on exercise and its impact on health and are often employed in hospitals, medical clinics, and rehabilitation facilities. Exercise Physiologists play an important role in the healthcare system in promoting healthy lifestyle habits for individuals with a variety of chronic health conditions.

Meeting the needs of our clients is at the centre of everything we do and this includes keeping our client’s information private and secure. To provide care we need to collect your personal health information and we employ best practices to ensure your information remains private. Simply put, we do not share your personal health information.

Videoconferencing is hosted by Zoom with end-to-end encryption enabled. This ensures that all communications are held private and that no third party, including Zoom has access to the meeting .

All emails from the Online Exercise Clinic are sent via ProtonMail which is one of the world’s most private and secure email providers. ProtonMail uses open source, independently audited end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption to secure communications. This protects against data breaches and ensures no one (not even ProtonMail) can read our messages.

Care that we deliver via text messaging is hosted by Signal. Signal is an independent nonprofit messaging app that offers end-to-end encryption with no ads, no affiliate marketers, and no tracking.
